I just left the hospital room of a beautiful lady who heard the words this week, you have cancer and there is really nothing we can do. She loves the Lord, loves her family, and is in a lot of pain, and has no idea of of the timeframe of when she will be called to her eternal home.
On the way to the car after a good visit it struck me, "what really matters" in this life. God for sure, your spouse, your kids, and what struck me in the room is how her pained face lit up with life when her husband mentioned that she taught the 3 year old Sunday School class for 17 years. WOW
Investment in others, letting others know that a foundation built on Jesus Christ is the best way to go. It's one of the things that you can look back on and say, "that really matters."

That story coupled with your sermon this past Sunday reminded me of a visual we used at my church in California.
Our pastor always used the "golf swing" as a visual. Yes, he did have the golf club with him while he preached too!
The visual was the pull back of the club and the follow through of the swing. His message was that as believers we needed to love God and love people....equally. The pull back of the golf club would represent "knowing God" and the swing would be "love others". What he meant was that only growing closer to God and building your foundation could be a dangerous thing. As well as, only serving and sacrificing for others could be dangerous.
To live a full and healthy christian life we need to learn and grow in our knowledge/relationship with Christ AS WELL AS serve our neighbors.
It sounds like our friend in the hospital had a great "golf swing"
This reminds me of my grandparents and how happy they are/were that they got to serve in their church for many many years. They never ever viewed it as something they had to do...it was a privilege. I just hope that when I am older I am able to look back on my own life and see that I always was willing to do God's work. God is so good...how can I not?
